Mina Mina and Ngapa Jukurrpa

Mina Mina and Ngapa Jukurrpa - by sisters Julie and Sabrina Nangala Robertson

Julie and Sabrina are daughters of the late, internationally renowned artist, Dorothy Napangardi (c.1956-2013).

Julie paints Mina Mina, an extremely important ceremonial site for the Napangardi and Napanangka women, located 600 km west of Yuendumu. The Mina Mina Jukurrpa is an important source of Warlpiri ritual knowledge and social organisation relating to the roles performed by men and women. The kirda (owners) of this Country can depict portions of this Dreaming in their paintings. Dorothy painted Mina Mina and passed down her Jukurrpa to her children, asking them to continue to paint for her. In 2023, Julie was the winner of the Telstra National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Awards Painting Award and her works have been included in numerous collections and exhibitions in Australia and overseas.

Sabrina paints her father's Ngapa Jukurrpa (Water Dreaming) in which the Jangala rainmaker men sang the rain and unleashed a giant storm, where it collided with another storm and was then carried across country by a kirrkalanji (brown falcon) until it became too heavy. It dropped the water at Pirlinyarnu, about 165 km west of Yuendumu, where it formed an enormous maluri (claypan). A mulju (soakage) exists there today and when it rains, hundreds of ngapangarlpa (bush ducks) still flock to this site. Sabrina has exhibited in Australia and France.
